Since 2004, Women’s Empowerment International (WE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, has worked with “Banks for the Poor” to provide microcredit loans and business services to needy women around the globe. In Honduras, WE works with the nonprofit Adelante Foundation in Intibucá to provide loans to women in this marginalized and poor region where illiteracy and childhood malnutrition rates are twice the national average. Honduras as a whole is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, behind only Haiti. But in Intibucá, the poverty rate is as high as Haiti’s. The Lencas are the largest indigenous group in the country and live in the cool, pine forests of Western Honduras. WE’s goal is to provide 375 women in the region with loans so that they can begin to establish businesses and work their way out of poverty.
